Afraid of the Big, Bad Dentist?

Dentophobia means fear of the dentist or of dental procedures. The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) doesn’t maintain data on dentophobia. However, a 2005 national study conducted by University of Toronto researchers determined that over 16% of Canadians suffer from dental fear, and 7.6% are so fearful that they postpone or avoid treatment altogether.

Why do people fear the dentist?

Most people have some reason for their fear. Many have had a previous negative experience in a dental office, such as:

· Gagging during x-rays

· Hearing screaming while in the waiting room

· Incompetent dentists (not enough training in a procedure)

· Invasion of people’s personal space

· Loss of control of the situation

· Uncaring dentists (poor chairside manner)

· Unskilled dentists (not enough artistic or aesthetic ability)

· Insufficient anesthetic being given

People may also fear things typically associated with dentists like injections (needles) and drills. Trips to the dentist may cause some additional financial strain or loss of work time. Interestingly, Dr. Mark Slovin, an American specialist in dental anxiety, notes that fear of the dentist tends to run in families, which suggests that it is learned from parents.

Historically, dentistry and the attitudes surrounding it have changed enormously in recent years. Our grandparents typically took a “no pain, no gain” approach and expected to be in pain at their dentist’s office. Correspondingly, dentists used to be accustomed to causing a certain amount of pain. This has all changed.

Solutions to fear of the dentist

Modern dentistry tends to be a lot more sensitive to people’s fear and anxiety, and many dentists offer sedatives as well as local anesthetic. Technology has improved, patient education is more important, dental offices are often far more pleasant and comfortable, and lasers and computers have speeded up most procedures and reduced pain and noise. We can now take for granted:

· Dentists who listen to questions and answer them honestly

· Dentists who care about how we feel

· Better dentist education, including ongoing training

· Face-to-face communication

· Better patient education about their treatments so they are prepared

· More pain-free treatments due to today’s anesthetics and laser technology

· TV in the treatment rooms, movies on ceiling screens, and many music DVDs to listen to on headphones during treatments

· Sedation dentistry and even sleep dentistry in some facilities

· Extra anesthetic given if the original amount turns out to be insufficient

· In cosmetic dental offices: blankets, neck pillows, paraffin wax hand treatments, warm towels, refreshment bars, and other spa-like pampering

What can we ourselves do?

1. We can make dental visits be only for check-ups and cleaning, by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush and floss regularly and do what the dentist or hygienist recommends, e.g. use soft brushes, floss the right way etc. That would make dental work unnecessary. There need be no gum disease treatment, fillings, crowns, etc. because our natural teeth are remaining strong and healthy.

2. We can choose a dentist who has up-to-date equipment and attitudes. There is equipment that detects decay extremely early, making the necessary filling very small and easy. Lasers, dental anesthetic swabs, oral sedation – these things reduce or eliminate pain and reduce anxiety.

3. Explain your fears to your dentist. The biggest solution to dental fear is trust in your dentist.

Meditation - A Waste Of Time?

Many would say yes, meditation is a waste of time!

Time is one of the few commodities we cannot save or store. Everyone is allotted 24 hours in a day and most of us have busy lifestyles with little time to lose. It would appear spending ½ to one hour sitting perfectly still doing nothing might easily fall into the category of a useless activity devouring precious time.

A Zen practitioner meditates between 6 and 8 hours each day for 20 to 25 years before they permanently balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have 20 to 25 years to become “enlightened.” I can barely squeeze out an extra hour per day, let alone 6 to 8.

Why would anyone even consider meditation?

Well, let’s look at the benefits achieved through regular practice first. Then I will explain how to quickly enter into Zen-like states and meditate like the masters.

First the benefits:

Regular practice actually sharpens the mind so you will achieve more in a shorter time period.
Science has proven the mind/body connection exists. When achieving the Alpha, Theta and Delta brainwave states we actually reduce production of the stress hormone cortisol. Stress is now considered by many to be responsible for upwards of 95% of all human dis-ease.
Allows for the body’s immune system to function efficiently.
Reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol.
You may experience a greater sense of closeness to Source. (God, Infinite Intelligence, etc.)
Most problems experienced by humanity are created while in the Beta or thinking brain state. Therefore we cannot resolve them by staying in Beta; we need to go into deeper brainwave patterns.
Meditation quiets the “noise” or constant self-talk in the mind; allowing for us to receive answers to problems, questions or situations.
Meditation creates new neural pathways between the left and right hemispheres, balancing the brain. Through this process fear, phobias, anxiety and worry begin to dissipate.
Reduces chronic pain.
Increased longevity.
An overall sense of well-being and harmony with everyone and everything.

Now let’s face it; that’s quite a shopping list with compelling reasons why we should meditate. Unfortunately many are not willing to trade time for the benefits. However if you do make the time, ultimately you develop laser sharp focus with even greater performance levels. In the end, you accomplish a great deal more in much less time.

Quickly Entering Into Zen-Like States

Okay, now that we know why meditation is beneficial, let’s look at how we can quicken the process to enjoy these fantastic benefits immediately instead of 25 years from now.

One of the first techniques I used was sound technology employing binaural beats which have been proven to balance the left and right hemispheres. The results are immediate. Within a few minutes of putting on the headphones your left and right hemispheres are balanced in a Zen-like state.

Basically you can meditate for 1 hour each day instead of 6 to 8. You also achieve the same results in much less than 20 to 25 years. Within weeks of using binaural beat technology I began experiencing profound shifts in my thinking, attitude and many would even say my appearance. I practiced daily for approximately two and a half years.

Then I began using monaural and isochronic tones which experts claim are about 900 times more effect than binaural beats for brainwave entrainment.

I am particularly excited about the isochronic sound waves as I find they help me to easily cope with day to day stress. I especially like the positive changes I experience listening to the stronger of the two – isochronic.

So there you have it. Now you know why meditation is not a waste of time. You also have a few options to research if you decide to enjoy the benefits of meditation without wasting valuable time.

Product: Backflip Smartphone

Manufacturer: Motorola

Wired Rating: 5

It’s about time Motorola did something crazy. The Cliq was predictably sleek. The Droid was pragmatically chunky. But AT&T’s new Backflip is just … odd.

At first glance the touchscreen channels the Cliq, but flipping it over reveals an exposed QWERTY keyboard. The phone opens like a reverse clamshell, and once you swing the keyboard around through 180 degrees, it’s facing you, resting beneath the screen. And, get this — hidden away on the back of the touchscreen is a small navigational touchpad (called the “Backtrack”) used for scrolling and selecting menu items.

Of course, this odd design choice inspired a slew of questions around the office: “Won’t the exposed keyboard type in your pocket?” (No.) “Will it snap if you open it the wrong way?” (Absolutely.) “Wait, so that touchie-nippley thing is on the back? Why?!” (We don’t know either.)

At 4.7 ounces it has a satisfying pocket weight, and its slightly cramped 3.1-inch touchscreen & mdash; though not as vibrant as other phones — is mostly responsive. We were able to squeeze out 320 minutes of talk time, while also tinkering with the usual multimedia and productivity accoutrements (music, video, GPS, 3G/WiFi data, and mobile TV).

Despite its running an older version of Google’s Android OS (1.5), all the bread-and-butter phone features make cameos on the Backflip and perform as expected.

Unfortunately, even though this is AT&T’s first Android phone, it isn’t a blank canvas like the Nexus One or Droid. Like T-Mobile’s Cliq, the Backflip runs the Motoblur Android skin. This take on the Android OS eschews the standard, grid-like home screen in favor of a widget-based user interface. On the bright side, these widgets are customizable and run the gamut in terms of functionality: News, weather, search and a bevy of social networking sites are all fair game.

Unfortunately, running more than a handful of these widgets simultaneously proves problematic. Not only does the Backflip’s 528-MHz processor start to get sluggish, but the on-screen presentation of simultaneously updated feeds from Facebook/Twitter/E-mail/Text/Weather/RSS is of location-aware, real-time data. It’s just too much.

Motorola attempts to address this by offering multiple home screens (accessible via left- and right-finger whisks), but there’s only so much one can do with 3.1 inches.

Although hardly great at presenting data, the Backflip’s icon-driven interface does offer a silver lining. With the right widget combination (and savvy placement), we were able to get a snapshot of every social facet of our lives on one screen.

However, when a co-worker asked to borrow the phone, we were suddenly a bit reluctant to hand it over. Why? Because pretty much anyone who sees the home screen has access to the explosion of personal data spewing out there. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (unless you have secrets to keep), but it perfectly underscores our issues with the Backflip. On top of its plodding performance, the phone only excels at serving one type of user: the mobile-tweeting, Facebook-feeding, geo-tagging oversharer.

Unless you fall into that category, it’s just not worth bending over backwards to use the Backflip.

WIRED Creative design balances style and function. MicroSD port lets you pack it full of tunes. Supports Android Marketplace for app downloads. QWERTY keys are large, easy to use. Beefy hinge keeps the phone from swinging around wildly. 5-MP camera (with flash!) takes decent pictures. Charges through micro-USB port.

TIRED One of the weakest Android offerings to date. Replaces Android’s Google search with Yahoo. Underpowered and responds at a glacial pace while multitasking. Filled with AT&T-branded bloatware. Flimsy battery door. Screen is too small for its icon-heavy UI.

Tinnitus Health

Have you yet suffered a ringing, buzzing, or clicking sound in your ears that has no discernible cause? That understanding is called tinnitus and millions of people experience from it every day. It can be so loud and frequent that it can be appallingly distracting, creating it difficult to focus on daily tasks. Tinnitus Health

Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do when you desire a cure for tinnitus. No one is really sure what causes tinnitus. Stress, sadness, and other emotional disturbances are often accompanied by this dreadful ringing in the ears. Many doctors believe the physical causes, when they exist, are based in poor circulation and the degradation of the nerves within the inner ear.

However, it can occur completely without connection to any other perceivable problems. Avoid loud noises to prevent tinnitus. It is very common for those who have suffered hearing loss from exposure to high volume sounds to experience tinnitus. Do not listen to music or other audio at high volumes. This is especially true when wearing headphones or ear buds. Recent studies have shown a high level of hearing loss and tinnitus in people who listen to MP3 players at loud volumes.

If the people around you can hear your music when you are wearing ear buds, the volume is definitely too loud for your literal health. You can also take vitamin and mineral supplements to both reduce the symptoms of tinnitus and help prevent it altogether. A supplement with a high dose of B-12 and magnesium is the best option. Some experts recommend an appropriately balanced multivitamin for this purpose. In addition to the two key ingredients, they also provide a large number of other nutrients that you need for your overall health. Tinnitus Health

Reduce your intake of caffeine and simple carbohydrates, such as sugars. A high intake of caffeine and sugar strongly correlates with increased severity and more frequent bouts of tinnitus. In order to avoid withdrawal symptoms, which can occur with both caffeine and carbohydrates, slowly reduce your consumption over the course of a week.

Drink plenty of water to help flush your system. Supplements made from all natural herbs is another good component for alleviating your discomfort. Experts recommend gingko biloba and hawthorn for the treatment of tinnitus. Many people have received substantial relief from the consumption of these herbs. Regular exercise has also proven to be very effectiveness for the alleviation of tinnitus symptoms. Every health professional agrees that exercise is also very beneficial to a person’s health in nearly countless ways.

Take some measures to make sure you are free of tension and relax. After inner ear nerve damage, stress is the main condition associated with tinnitus. There is a dizzying array of choices available. Eastern arts, like tai chi and yoga, are great stress busters and also wonderful for your general health. The essential oil of rose is a very effective aromatherapy for relaxation. Tinnitus Health

You may also wish to see a licensed massage therapist or chiropractor to help relieve major stress. You should do whatever works best for you to relax and release your tension. Suffering from Tinnitus and Ringing in Ear? Get your life back forever by checking out Tinnitus Health now.

Home recording equipment and supplies ensure quality audio output. There are several essential home recording devices.

On top of the list of home recorders are microphones. Microphones include dynamic microphones used for stage and studio. It is not required to use phantom power. It is compatible to use with snare drums and guitar cabs. Dynamic mikes are more durable. Condenser microphones on the other hand need phantom power. Ideally it is equipped with a large two diaphragm capsule and allows 3 directional patterns. Another distinction in mikes is its sound receiving capability or how it picks up sound - the difference between “omni-directional” and “directional” mikes. Directional mikes derive sound in a place directly before the microphone. The omni-directional mikes gather sound equally from all directions. A “cardioid” mike is the most common type of directional mike because it picks up audio thru a heart-shaped pattern radiating out from the front part of the microphone. The difference between mono and stereo mikes is that mono mikes record a one channel audio while stereo mikes derive audio from different signals with the help of a stereo recording device. Other microphone accessories include boom stands, mounts, pop filters, windscreens, transformers and stand arms. Windscreens have mike foam or cloth cover to reduce noise and ideally the fuzzy fabric type is the most effective type.

Headphones are used to monitor environmental noise, sound levels and generally recording quality.

Cables connect recording equipments and instruments. This includes instrument cables, microphone cables, connectors, adapters, cable organizers, cable testers, speaker cables, digital audio cables, pedal cables and adapter cables. Average good cable seems to cost in the range of 75 cents through $2.00 Speakers and loudspeakers are essential instruments to the sound being produced in side the recording studio. Good loudspeakers, efficient amplifiers and sub bass units should be prioritized.

Computers are important in home recording. It should have a required amount of processing and ram. Both Macintosh and Windows are acceptable platforms or operating systems that can be used.

Moveable compact disk recorders, direct-to-CD field recorder, DAT recorders, straight to laptop recording, standard mini disc recorders and Hi- MD recorders are audio recording equipments.

Digital audio workstations, software & audio interfaces include sequencers for digital audio and MIDI, software synthesizers and samplers, audio effects software, interactive composing software, computer sample CDs, dj software, educational software and CD burning software. These supplies are used for mixing, editing, recording and mastering computer. The existence of freeware for beginners in home recording is a good way to practice when recording a few of tracks. One example of freeware is Audacity. When using Macintosh operating system, the recommended audio recording software includes iLife, logic and logic express software. In order to convert analog signals from instruments and recording it to the computer one must have a digital-analog converter or the sound card. There are two sound cards: the high end and the outboard model. The high end soundcard is plugged into the motherboard while the outboard is attached thru an usb or fire wire with power source. High end soundcards are cheaper and ideal for beginners.

Last but not the least one item that can be useful in home recording is a video tutorial kit. One example is the Music Producer Pro which includes practical advice and demonstrations on music production.

Ipod Nano Accessories

The iPod Nano is one of the most successful gadgets of recent years. It is a product by Apple Inc. that allows you to play your music on the move on a stylish and coveted machine. Ever since the iPod was first launched by Apple in 2005, sales have been growing and growing and more than making up for the fact that sales of Apple computers were in decline.

The iPod Nano is a spin-off of the original iPod, using the iPod Shuffle program. The player includes a flash memory, a small screen and a simple-to-use click wheel. The flash memory is the main difference from the original iPod, meaning that the Nano is extremely lightweight and even more portable.

Not only are the Nano players themselves becoming extremely popular, but there are a number of accessories available for music lovers who own this player. These accessories can really enhance the enjoyment. For a music player the biggest factor is without a doubt the audio options, and Nano really excels in the area of portability, with its ability to store hours of music.

The Nano is designed to be listened to by a single user, which means that earphones are absolutely essential when using the product. Earphones come in a wide variety of styles and different functions, where the best will have the ability to block out excess background noise and to deliver a crisp, high-quality audio directly to the ear of the listener. The great thing about the Nano is that you can either use your current earphones, or upgrade their quality whenever you want.

Some of the varieties that earphones come in include the differentiation between earphones in the ear, and headphones which cover the whole area of the ear. Whichever one you choose could impact on their ability to reduce background noise, though it will all depend on the particular brand and model that you choose. These can come with or without cords, can be smaller or larger depending on your needs, and range from extremely cheap (around $30) to much more expensive ($200+). You can easily do some research into individual models of earphone to decide which one suits your needs.

Ear buds are also a newer form of earphones. They are named due to the way in which they look like the bud of a plant, and they will fit easily into the inside of the ear canal. These may be slightly higher in price, or cost the same as other earphones depending on the quality. Just make sure that you find some that fit your ears well.

The iPod Nano can be used with all types of earphones, and also comes with popular iTunes software designed for both Mac and Windows OS. This software is used by a variety of users, so is a bonus when using the Nano and iTunes together. As you can see, the iPod Nano is a very nifty machine, that still continues to grow in popularity.

A good quality audio recording equipment ensures high quality audio output and there are several types of audio equipments available in the market. Microphone is the most important audio equipment that may be used on stage as well as in a studio. However, you may not require phantom power if you are recording for a casual purpose, you must understand that it can be used with guitar cabs as well as with snare drums. Condenser microphones need phantom power while dynamic microphones prove to be more durable and long lasting. Directional microphones derive sound from a source which is placed directly in front of the mike while an omni-directional microphone can derive sound from all the directions. Mono microphones record one channel sound while stereo microphones derive sound from various signals while using an audio recording equipment. Other accessories that can be used with microphones are boom stands, pop filters, mounts, transformers, stand arms and wind screens. The Windscreens have microphone cover or foam for reducing noise and fuzzy type of fabric is the most popular ones.

Headphones are also used for monitoring sound levels, environmental noises and recording quality. Cables are used to connect instruments and equipments used for recording and some of these may include connectors, adapters, cable testers, cable organizers, adapter cables and speaker cables. Loudspeakers and speakers are also an essential audio equipment that are used to increase the volume of the sound produced. Efficient amplifiers, sub bass units and good loudspeakers are of topmost priority.

Computers are widely used for home recording purposes and for that, they need to have adequate RAM and processing system. Both Windows and Macintosh platforms accept audio recording. Moveable CD recorders, DAT recorders, direct-to-CD field recorders, standard mini disc recorders, straight to laptop recorders and Hi-MD recorders are some of the most important audio recording equipments. Digital audio work stations, software and audio interfaces may include sequencers for MIDI and digital audio, audio effects software, software synthesizers, samplers, computer sample CDs, interactive composing software, DJ software and the very common CD burning software. A good quality audio recording equipment can be used for editing, mixing, mastering and recording sound and the existence of freeware in home recording is a perfect way to practice while recording tracks. If you are using a Macintosh operating system, then the recommended software for audio recording may be Logic, Logic express and iLife. You need to have a sound card or digital analog converter to convert your analog signals and record them on your computer.
